Bagco Enterprises was established in the Philippines in June 2006 as a single proprietorship owned by a Filipino chemist. He saw opportunities to commercialize a test kit that would semi-quantitatively detect the presence of Vitamin A in light-colored cooking oils. QuickView, the test kit he developed, branded and patented in the Philippines is a simple device that can inexpensively test Vitamin A in light-colored cooking oils. The Philippine Food and Drug Administration had tested the kit itself and wrote Bagco in May 2007 confirming the reliability of the QuickView Vitamin A test kit.The need for a simple, inexpensive Vitamin A test kit arose when the Philippine Legislature enacted the Food Fortification Law in 2004 making Vitamin A fortification mandatory in all cooking oils, flour and sugar sold in the country. Manufacturers/producers of these products as well as government agencies enforcing the Fortification Law had, at that time, only one method in testing the presence of Vitamin A in these products – the High Pressure Liquid Chromatography or HPLC Method. This method, which makes use of a HPLC machine, is very expensive, long and tedious, taking days to obtain the results. Bagco’s QuickView test kit is 20 times (20x) cheaper per test than the HPLC method and it takes only minutes to obtain the results.
In 2015, further validation tests were conducted on the QuickView test kit by the Nutrition Center of the Philippines and are now being reviewed for possible publication in a scientific journal. The abstract of the study was also approved for presentation during the Micronutrient Forum on October 2016 in Cancun, Mexico.
In January 2016, due to his advancing age and desire to continue supporting various stakeholders in the Food Fortification Program, the proprietor of Bagco Enterprises and owner of the QuickView Vitamin A test kit assigned all his rights and interests to the test kit to Casnar Corporation. He continues to be one of the major stockholders of the Corporation.
